"Should donors give to students rather than schools?," 16 Jul 2008
Jonathan Bydlak seeks to match donors directly with students, rather than matching donors to universities... One advantage of the idea is greater competition...
I like the idea...
"Discover Scholars offers unique concept in education," 9 Aug 2008
Imagine having the power, as a donor, to fund particular types of students.
Imagine, as a student, having someone want to help you attain greatness.
"An Innovative Approach to Financial Aid," 17 Jul 2008
I’ve found an interesting idea via Tyler Cowen: matching donors directly with students, thus cutting out the middle-man of the Financial Aid Office.
The organization that arranges the matching is called DiscoverScholars.org, and the guiding principle is that a direct matching process is more transparent, accountable and efficient than the current system schools have in place...
It would be nice to really compete competitively for financial aid based on a transparent matching process.
"Discover Scholars," 14 July 2008
Very interesting concept. Scholarships are a hot topic with donors these days. Private foundations have to go through some hoops to offer them. Community Foundations are one way donors get scholarships done. Discover Scholars could be an interesting alternative ...
Discover Scholars is a very interesting addition to the philanthropic landscape... the concept is intriguing.

"Poor Performance Rewarded," 18 July 2008
I am also quite charmed by ideas proposed in the US ... to channel money to graduate students independent of the universities in order to allow them greater freedom to do novel research rather than be a research peon for a professor. See this site for private sector-individual pairings.
